Categories and/or individual products on the home page is common. That said, you can have anything you want. I think if you used Opencart for a few weeks on a live site you would realize it's potential and how it works. You may get short answers on here as generally pros and developers are happy to guide you but they won't give you all their experience and knowledge for free as they have bills to pay. You have already been advised on how to have categories on the home page. Either take the slow route and get there yourself or short cut it by posting in the commercial support forum. Get the job done, get a live Opencart site up and running and hopefully you will soon have a budget for ongoing site development.

Is the extension named "HTML content" listed in your Extensions > Modules list? That's what you should try to use. Create a module in there and then add it to your home layout. It is confusing and took me more time than I care to admit to figure out the layout thing and how to add to.
