Just to let you know that codecanyon.net is illegally selling copies of the Export/Import tool which you can freely download and use under the terms of the GPLv3 license from the OpenCart extensions!

To all the OpenCart addon authors:

Please check http://codecanyon.net/search?utf8=%E2%9 ... m=OpenCart to make sure they are not illegally selling your addons!

No response yet from them. They are clearly violating copyright laws, e.g. the GPLv3.

Hi guys,
I'm responding on behalf of Envato (you can check out my staff profile http://codecanyon.net/user/Carmen here). Just letting you know we are looking in to this and will be taking the appropriate action asap. A huge thank you for reporting this and letting us know. Thanks, Carmen

But the GPL v3 permits charging for copies of software that you distribute.
Only the source must be provided and author copyright keeped, all under GPL.
They can do that if they find buyers. Nothing illegal.

True.
We really need to change the OpenCart license to MIT or BSD

CodeCanyon doesn't provide the source code of the Export/Import tool for free, hence they violate the GPL v3.

Since Export/Import was explicitly released under GPLv3 there's probably nothing that can be done (unless the license was removed or the code obfuscated) but I believe OpenCart extensions in general are a bit murkier. I think switching OpenCart to LGPL would do the trick (I'm not a lawyer though).

As it is PHP script, the source code is provided (unless obfuscated) when you get the product from them.

LGPL was created for libraries.

vQmod licence (GPL 3) need also to be changed as extensions depend of it for running.

The GPL is absolutely incompatible with a commercial extensions business.
Look at other major e-commerce softwares, they are not under GPL.
They should have no dependance between the core and extensions (free or commercial).

How does the MIT or BSD license help here? I mainly want the user to have free access to the source code, along with the protections coming with the GPLv3.

I think you are right. I noticed that the GPLv3 allows modifications to its standard license text in the section 7. Additional Terms, maybe I can add the restriction of not charging for the source code in there.

Could this modified section also be used for the core OpenCart so as to legally allow commercial extensions such as web themes or other addons?

To Daniel or Qphoria what do you think?

I'm no lawyer either. But wouldn't creative commons share alike (by-sa) http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ do the trick for you?
