Well, we have to look pretty now don't we.

In catalog/template/default/layout.tpl, insert the line, up the top where the stylesheet is defined

Code: Select all

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="catalog/template/<?php echo $this->directory; ?>/image/favicon.ico" />
Then put your favicon in the template images folder.

Good call.

Maybe this should be there in the core. So the framework is all there, you'd just need to change the favicon.ico image to your custom one

I was thinking of an Open Cart favicon that comes standard with the download package but I couldn't see any logo that would lend itself to an Ouvre Carte icon

We're looking at new branding, but that's a separate issue.

As for being in the core, I'm not sure it's a good idea, simply because by default we'll have to plaster our logo all over your site, unless you decide to customise it or remove it.

I'd rather keep the customisation to the end user.

Perhaps once the new branding comes in this is something we can look at again.

Thanks for the input though.

Update: I'll investigate a generic GPL carts images to use as to not to be imposing, and the favicon.ico can be replaced for customisation.

Code: Select all

The original favicon feature was created by Microsoft for Internet Explorer which would request a favicon from a set URL (/favicon.ico) on every website.
This would mean that the favicon may not always work using the method, but i'm going to go ahead and add it in the core anyway.

Just to round this thread off.
This has been added to the front & backend in the latest version of 0.7.9 in SVN

How long does it take for the favicon to appear? I have emptied the cache, clear private data, tried other browsers...

It's not instant if "changing" the favico
I usually upload the new favico, then go to bed and wait for Firefox to think about it
I never worked out why or where it's cached. It was easier to just go to bed and wait

Wait a couple hours, clear/empty all private data, quit all browsers and then reopen browsers and then it works!

Gentlemen,

I'm trying to replace your favicon.ico  with my own image.  ..... but I can't seem to open the file .

My programs don't recognize it.  I figured I would simply modifiy my image/logo and save as

favicon.ico  but cant recognize the file type?    any ideas.    actually  I did find one program to open it, but then it wouldn't let me save it as a .ico file  ... didn't recognize that format .?

Hello
It is an .ico (not .png, jpg, gif) So you need a .ico editor to edit it.

Instead, why don't you just turn your jpg, gif, png into an ico from here

Actually these days it doesn't actually matter. Although by default browsers look for /favicon.ico, due to css you can define it as any web image format. It ultimately depends on the browser, firefox in particular now supports pngs/gifs/jpgs as favicons, or you can simply rename your image.png or such to favicon.ico, and it'll work too.

However, for the sake of it, it's probably in your best interest to convert it to a proper ico.
