Just installed the upgrade and my data base was replaced with the motorcycle demo. Is that the same thing as the home page being incorrect in some of the other post? Checked the server my old DB is still ok. Is this a setting or what do I need to transfer in my old theme files back to the server?

Thanks, can't seem to find another post that tells me what I think I need.

The db settings are towards the end of the file config.php which is in your root (i.e. "shop" directory).

There's also a second config.php for the admin stuff, in the admin subdirectory.

Both files have my correct DB and correct password, any other ideas? Thanks for the help.

I'm stumped.  When you install, it over-writes the database.  I found that out the hard way.

What about trying to restore your good database?  Make a sql backup and then restore it through the admin panel.
Admin > Configuration > Backup/Restore > Restore

Yes, the installer will clear an existing database.

The sql in the install folder contains "drop table if exists" statements.

Long story short, my backup DB is blank and the one on the web is full of motorcycles. As a newbie I see I made several errors here, but I think overwriting the existing DB should be something that has a big red flag in the installation instructions and maybe even a pop-up window to warn people. Thanks for all the helpful comments, at least I resolved the problem.

Installation means installation. What you wanted to do was use the "Upgrade" script. A new install is no different than installing windows. It overwrites (formats) the harddrive first and then writes the new one.

Should be there ... at least i know there is one in 0.7.9. Never checked 0.7.8

-EDIT-
Ahh  I see. 0.7.8 doesn't have one. Well there's your first problem :) 0.7.8 is dead to me. viva la 0.7.9
I guess it took care of itself.
