f you have the same content on different domains you will get a penalty. If you have duplicate content on the same domain the search engine will decide which url to use.
trust me i'm right. if you beive there needs to be unquie content on each url on your domain then you have got the wrong information. read googles own blog and videos.
OK, so here is why i know google ranks your pages lower than they should be if the same content appears lots of times on different urls of the same domain. I have 20 products all with the same title, image, description, everything apart from the price/weight is the same; I find that google simply won't rank any of these pages high at all, although when i make a single product with the same title but with a new image and description of similar length using the same keywords, this page will outrank all the other pages for that product within a week.
So if this issue effects 20 similar product pages, why wouldn't it effect other pages. ie some of my category pages have been indexed by google over 10 times under different urls
http://domain.com/sub-category?sort=pd.name&order=DESC
http://domain.com/sub-category?sort=pd.name&order=ASC
http://domain.com/sub-category?sort=p.price&order=ASC
http://domain.com/sub-category?sort=p.price&order=DESC
http://domain.com/sub-category?sort=rating&order=DESC
http://domain.com/sub-category?sort=rating&order=ASC
http://domain.com/category/sub-category ... order=DESC
http://domain.com/category/sub-category ... &order=ASC
http://domain.com/category/sub-category ... &order=ASC
http://domain.com/category/sub-category ... order=DESC
http://domain.com/category/sub-category ... order=DESC
http://domain.com/category/sub-category ... &order=ASC
i have just installed 1.4.9 and I see there’s still no canonical link? imo it should be included in 1.5, and just link every category page with no breadcrumb, just 'http://domain.com/category' or 'http://domain.com/product'. It would have to be an option as it could ruin a lot of peoples search engine page rankings for existing pages.
Also by adding the canonical link it would consolidate all the natural inbound links for the page adding search engine strength. (Natural links to your site can carry a lot of weight as the usually appear on pages very relevant to your product. The main problem here is that the people making these links won't stick with the correct url, rather they will use whatever breadcrumb url they happen to be on)
Please, someone just agree with me!
