I tried updating to 4.x and it failed. I am mostly concerned with just restoring my site to functional at this point. It does load of a massive amount of errors. Can anyone sort this out?

At the every basic level - Opencart 4 requires php8 and Opencart 2.1.0.1 will not function on php8 (unless you specifically upgraded it). You will have to put that back.

No information provided HOW you are trying to restore - but contact your host and ask them to restore from a back up database and files.
Why are you trying to upgrade to Opencart 4 anyway? It is not stable, not advised for live sites and has many bugs ?

Opencart 3.0.4.1 supports php8.
and do not upgrade using the "quick way" it is not quick - it is safer and quicker to install from scratch, import data, install mods you absolutely need, check it all works and ask your host to transfer it over to live.

I tried updating to 4.x
Let me stop you there.

Most top OpenCart developers do not recommend using 4 yet, instead use 3.0.4.1.

Thank you for your reply. I am aware that 2.x will not function on PHP 8. I have reverted PHP version to an older rev.

I made of a backup of my "store" directory before trying to do the upgrade. I have restored that. I am no longer trying to update to 4.x, I just want to get my 2.1 install back up and running. Before any changes where made to opencart I did do a backup from the Admin side. Is it best to make a clean install of 3.x and restore from that 2.1 backup at this point?

Per my original post I have aborted my task to update to 4.x and trying to just get my old 2.1 store running.

I did make a backup of my 2.1 store before any changes where made from the admin interface. Would it be best to just create a new 3.x install and restore from this backup?

For sure I'd verify the php version is actually 7.x by going to the store directory and running phpinfo(). (If you don't know this then please search for it)
Then I would make sure the config files are pointing to the right locations AND ensure your storage directory is set up properly (and clean i.e. nothing from 4.x)
Once that is done I would try again and see if you get errors and report back.

As above Mike (Cue4cheap) is 100% correct - everything he said above PLUS make sure that you clear any cache - (check if you use cloudflaire - host caching - and browser caching).
