[SOLVED] Refeshing Modification cache causes error

When refreshing the modifications cache, I'm getting an "HTTP Error 500"
Any ideas?

Yes... Look in your error logs and tell us what is in there. Best to do the refresh and show us the error at about that time.

The error log is empty, if you mean Maintenance/Error log. If I click on download, I get the warning: "Warning: Your error log file error.log is 0B!"

As a general rule this would most likely be caused by a faulty modification.
Error 500 is a general server error - meaning the server found a fault.
This is like saying your car does start and calling a garage and asking any ideas - yes thousands. We will be here for weeks trying to help you at this point and still be no closer - or maybe a wild guess. A garage can guess you forgot to fill your car with petrol and it might be the right answer but it would just be luck.

This is about as much information as your question allows.
You make no mention of where you get an error 500 - all pages, admin, catalog.
You make no mention of any installed themes or extension.
You make no mention of OC version.
You make no mention of whether you used an official version or an unofficial "Softaculous" or github, or, or, or.
You make no mention of php version.
You make no mention of you just uploaded something new.
You make no mention if this is a new install, an upgrade, it has been running fine for x years.

Please explain your situation in full details and if you can not do that you will need to get a professional.

If you are feeling lucky -
You can disable every modification and maybe you will find one that causes the error.
You can return to default theme, maybe that.
You can check you have DOMDocument enabled on your server.
You can check your php version is compatible with your site.
You can check if you installed an official OC version (ie not use your servers "softilicious" or similar unofficial version of OC).
You can check your config files are pointing to the correct modification folder.

Mona provided a lot of info. We are shooting in the dark and my shooting is: DOMDocument is not enabled on your server.

verify that your php setup (php.ini) has extension xml or dom activated, it should be by default.

That turned out to be correct! I had the server guys to enable DOMDocument, and then everything worked! Question is why they disabled it.....

Good to hear it now works. Please add '[SOLVED]' to the beginning of this original form thread title so that others can benefit from this solution too if they come across the same issue.
