My site is only in New Zealand dollars (NZD) which is supported according to PayPal docs. I can get right through the checkout and add Visa details. But the unsupported currency error gets triggered.
Any ideas why?

Try the latest PayPal Integration extension to see whether this fixes the problem.

Check the currency code entered in your settings doesn't have any spaces of hidden characters. Check the currency_code in the order details in the database is NZD.
