I have removed the files in the storage/cache directory that is in the root of the server (outside OC directory). Now my site renders blank with no code - even the login page. What files should be in the storage/cache directory and how do I retrieve them? I have backed up the database but not the site files.
Could be a Internal Server 500 error. What's in your server's error log?

Only a 0 byte index.html file and that won't be the problem.
As above, a blank page usually means there's an error that's being hidden, this might help:

Error logs can also be viewed if you have FTP access?
