I've spent about 5 hours so far today trying to install the simple theme and language examples provided in the Guthub repository, on a brand new installation of Opencart 4. No success. Quite a lot of frustration....and wistfully remembering the days when you could just load theme files on the server and it was done.

I have a new Opencart build about to start and I'm attracted to Opencart 4 because (I think, in the absence of any documentation) it offers a better way of adding custom controller code via the new Events package (can anyone confirm this?) . But reading through this board there are several comments about OC4.0.0.0 not being suitable for production yet, 4.0.1.0 being just around the corner etc etc.

Is there a date for the next OC4.x release? Is it worth waiting or should I just go with OC3?

Thanks for any opinions.

Well, being around Opencart for such a long time already, one should be aware, that it takes a good while until a new OC Development will be ready for real Action.

This is the sort of thing that makes me wonder about Opencart, despite all the time I've been promoting it and using it for clients.

I had (apparently naively) assumed that since there was a 4.x version in beta for quite some time, that this version was pretty sorted. Since the original post I see that you 4.0.0.0 won't let you delete a product either.

Clinging to optimistic mode, can anyone give a hint as to when the next version might be available? Does the Events capability allow the creation of a custom Controller file which can be used in place of the standard one?

Opencart is free software that allows you to make money - what is there to complain about?

Not a please or thank you in sight. Makes me wonder about the world. Computing really is not a very pleasant industry to work in. Manners are as free as complaints and neither manners nor appreciation is exclusive to those who want something in return and in the case of this industry so many refuse to even be pleasant when they want something - let alone when they expect it for free !!!

Opencart is far from perfect and each one of us would have our opinions on improvement, BUT some and especially those from the beginning, spent huge amounts of their own time and effort to bring opencart to the world, fix the issues and help those who were less Opencart literate - those people earned the well deserved respect and some are still trying, although it is often quite clear for whom it is being done and why it is so noticeably an unworthy cause. On this issue I would suggest adding [stable] to releases after they have been proven to be, maybe someone would like to suggest this to Daniel. As for your issue with the product not deleting - search the forum - it has been noticed, you are far from the first to have downloaded and tested OC4.

Now that MY rant is over to match your own.

Opencart 4 is not suitable for production sites.
Opencart 3 however is perfectly suitable and in the front end none of your PAYING clients would notice. You can add a custom controller using Events in OC3.
So use OC3.0.3.8 to make your profits and please think twice before you complain about something that NO ONE FORCED you to make money from.

Well....I'll just say that being berated on a support forum for asking a couple of questions does indeed make computing really not a very pleasant industry to work in. Sadly it happens too often here.

Yes, I'll be paid for this work, like most of the other posters here and everyone who has posted so far on this thread. No, my client has no idea about Opencart versions, and my invoice will be the same regardless. But it seemed to me that Opencart 4, as described in the release notes, would offer my client a better and more future-proofed solution, and that's what I'm struggling to find out.

So, I'll ask the two questions again:

- can anyone give any indication when the next release might be
- can anyone point me at an up to date explanation of how events work (since the document here appears to be different than the aforementioned OC4 examples)

Thanks

When it comes to OpenCart release date us never accurate. Let alone that new version has a good chance to introduce more bugs and ruin everyrhig. So if I were you, I wouldn't bother. OpenCart is not WordPress.

Events are basically triggers, you can find them in any framework, but by different names (e.g.: hooks). When you commence a particular action (event) system checks if there's any function that should be additionally executed. OC 3 also has events system, just a bit simplified. Nevertheless you can use this system, no need to install OC 4 for this. Nothing really innovative and worth upgrading.

Thanks.

I will reluctantly abandon thoughts of OC4 for now.
