Unable to add images via image mgr- pls help

Hi all, I really need some help. I recently tried to upgrade from 1.47 to 1.48 with bad results. I reverted back to 1.47 and now I'm finding I can't add any images to new products. The image mgr comes up when I click the little Icon by the Camera graphic- the Image mgr window opens but none of the buttons do anything (Upload, rename, copy, etc) I also get nothing when I try to expand the Image folder on the left with the plus sign BUT when I click on the IMAGE word with folder icon it opens up my starting admin dashboard page in the image manager window WEIRD!. I was reading around on here and say some references to permissions so I changed everything in /IMAGES to 777 with no change. Please any help appreciated- I need to post some stuff for a customer today. Thanks!!

Did you do a fresh install of the cart and database and import your data back in?
