Does anyone know why session data is stored in the database in the first place.

And doesn't expire for 139 days?

It seems a long time to hold this data and it very quickly adds overhead on a busy store.

You need to clear the sessions manually from the database. Otherwise, an extension might be required. Alternatively, since database session are not an obligation, you could always switch to file sessions from your system/config folder.

Yes, they do have a purpose. It's just the length that may become problematic due to the size it may result on the database.
