Opencart like a CMS website

Hi All,

I have been wondering if it is possible to do the below:

1. Possibility to have pages added to the navbar and make it a drop down bar if there are sub-pages.
2. In these pages, not have any sidebars. Just plain 1 column for text and pictures
3. Add 1 tab in the navbar called shop which should be what opencart looks like now with 3 columns.

Result
A full fledged CMS which can really be used like a company website and not just a webshop website. I know currently you can add pages in the information box. But that only means that the sideboxes stays.

If this is done, people will really not ask any integration with other CMS like wordpress, joomla and so on. Of course it will not be as advanced as wordpress or joomla but for simpler websites it will be perfect! I am sure it is not that tough to do it if guys have already done opencart so wonderfully! :)

What do you guys think?

No, but if you want a CMS take a look at Joomla, Wordpress or Website Baker because you might have missed it but OpenCart is a...... Cart.

yea... and the original big names all had them (phpnuke, postnuke, etc)

Here's the thing tho. Daniel made a 2-in-1 with OpenCart.
First off, he created his own framework. You may notice that the main site is also built on this framework and has none of the cart code. This "IS" a cms.

On top of that he built the cart as an "application" that uses the framework.

He strives to keep the "application" level independent from the "framework" level which means a cms can be built right on top of the framework.

But the main focus of this project is the cart at this time.

Well what I required was a CMS for all my small business websites. All of them currently use Wordpress & it's seriously overkill for some people that have no idea. So since Daniels framework is so similar to codeigniter (or the same concept), I decided to hack the Opencart system to include basic content tools.

I've hacked up a little cms that will actually run within Opencart(eventually) OR standalone. I like to do things so that everything can work together.
It has content pages, uses the same templates as Opencart & basically runs in much the same way - but it's just a CMS for content. I even added revisions for content to allow for the 'oops' factor, when my clients are editing their content.

Sorry for teasing you all, but contact me if you're interested in a beta release. Code's still a bit messy, but it works.

You can make Opencart have as many columns as you want. You can make your own positions. It's just not built into the main release that's all... damn. Maybe I should write a book or some blog posts on how to do things. So little time. I need to clone myself so that you can all have the information now, rather than in a months time.

yes I well aware of the capabilities of opencart, I just thought it odd that the OP thought that you needed to remove the columns to make it like a cms when every cms has columns by default.

The reason why I said that was for the front page. Many of the exclusive goods websites don't really have a sidebar on the front page. It looks great. Later when you click onto the other pages, the sidebar appears. But many other websites, still don't have a sidebar but just a drop down navbar at the top. That looks great too. The thing is with opencart as soon as you have the category module on the sidebar it looks like a shopping site....no offence ...opencart is supposed to do that :)

But it would be great if it looked like a corporate website where shopping is an option...

Opencarts focus at the moment is not on it..and I am fine with it. Make OC the best shopping cart! :)

But if it is not too much of work to make a cms out of it too, I see why not do it..none of the other shopping carts have it..they all have to do some sort of bridge between wordpress, joomla etc. And that is an overkill for a small company. If OC can do a simple version...I see OC become really really popular.

In this project the visitor is able to view the product and add to the cart which will not display the product as this is the emailing system. The cart will be emailed to the store owner and the user himself/herself and the store owner review the things and send mail prices to the users.
