clean upgrade from 2.0.3.1 to 3.0.1.2 returns frontend Error: A theme has not been assigned to this store!

Downloaded a clean 2.0.3.1 version, installed it and .....
Downloaded a clean 3.0.1.2 on top of it to upgrade
Followed the instructions to the letter and still ended up with :
Error: A theme has not been assigned to this store!
message when the shop was entered.
Any clues?

Did you try assigning one under Extensions > Extensions > Themes?

Was there any particular reason for that chain of events? Why not just start with a clean 3.x install? I ment to ask this before by the way.

The reason I tried was because I had the same issue with a fully working 2.0.3.1 shop that I migrated to 3.0.1.2.
A clean 3.0.1.2 install works fine but that does not help me now...
