I have spent some time looking at Opencart and it does seem to be the best solution for what I am doing but wanted to drop in and see if what I am trying to achieve is out of reach or if I should be looking at a different type of platform altogether.

My customer is looking to put kiosks into the retail stores (resellers) where users can search and look for the products they need. My customer has a large catalogue of products and this is would make it easier for the resellers as the people coming into the store can just browse through the kiosk.

I am basically thinking of using Opencart as a virtual catalogue.

By default, we would just have all purchase options and pricing disabled.
Ideally though, there would be some customization for each reseller. I realize there may or may not already be a way to do this, even if it means I need a developer to build a module for this purpose). The customization would include:
-Different featured products based on the reseller.
-Different pricing based on the reseller.
-Inventory at current reseller's store.

The main reason why I thought Opencart and not something else in particular, was because said company has plans and ambitions for just selling direct eventually as well and actually doing ecommerce. My recommendation was why not do an ecommerce sight right out of the box with the required customizations do have reseller kiosks.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome darkwingduck!

Opencart might be a good fit although I'm not normally a fan of shoehorning a piece of software designed to do one thing and then modifying it a great deal to do something else. However, if e-commerce is an end goal at some point, then I would say Opencart MIGHT be a good choice.

It's not really possible to know for sure based on the data provided in your post. However, if you want to just use a 'catalog' mode for now and then switch over to a full e-commerce system at a later time you might find it meets your needs.

If you do a search in the extension store for just 'catalog', you'll get a few options that empower this mode into Opencart.

Personally, I would probably go with the Journal theme found here and use its' catalog mode.

Maybe take a look.
