question about modules compatability with 2.2 2.3

I used some 2.0 modules in 2.3 yet to work. I wonder is it often a case that new release breaks theme and module functionality or it depends?

Yes, sometimes.
Here the difference between 2.2.x and 2.3.x is greater than normal.
