Remove newsletter link on checkout page

I have tried to follow a myriad of instructions on how to remove the newsletter link from the site I am working on. I am using OpenCart 2.2 and Journal 2 theme. I have tried uploading a VQMod extension, deleting and replacing lines of code, disabling the module in the Journal template, and I am still left with the sign up option on my check out page.
See screenshot..... How do I remove that last line.

if you are using journal checkout feature, you need to find the right files on the journal theme to remove it. I think the journal theme developer would know best.

Simply open the file

catalog/view/theme/journal2/template/journal2/checkout/checkout.tpl

and search for this section starting with: But this should be able to disable in the backend ...
