show quantity available

I am trying to display the quantity available on the product template. I thought it would be as easy as using the variable $quantity. Doesn't work.

So, I went into /catalog/controller/product/product.php and saw a variable $product_info['quantity'] being used for the stock status. So I added the line:

$data['quantity'] = $product_info['quantity'];

Still doesn't work. It just doesn't seem like it should be this difficult, so I'm pretty sure I'm missing something. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.
