export import tool error

I am getting this error when I try to export products
Error: MySQL server has gone away
Error No: 2006
SELECT attribute_group_id, name FROM `oc_attribute_group_description` WHERE language_id='1' ORDER BY attribute_group_id ASC
interestingly I had only just exported other products successfully when the error started.

I have tried exporting smaller numbers of products with no luck, I don't understand the message about attributes, none of my products have any attributes. I have tried using attribute id instead of names, still no luck.
I am using opencart Version 2.2.0.0.
