Make 1.5xx Responsive

My site is running on 1.5.x

Everything I've read on the upgrade process to 2.x seems to be a world of hurt unless you spend cash paying for the upgrade, which I don't want to do..

Are there any free modules that I can add to my existing install to have it responsive.

Or is the best thing to choose a free theme that includes a responsive option..

I had one theme installed but was getting problems during checkout and loosing orders..

Any input appreciated.
