Can anyone suggest a good extension that will add in the sales tax for the states that actually have a sales tax? I saw one that went by county, but not state. I sell comic books...
Thanks!
You generally only need to charge sales tax for states where your business has a physical location, but that's something that you'll need to contact an accountant about to be sure.
If you want tax automatically calculated for every place in the U.S., you could use taxcloud.net along with my TaxCloud Integration extension, which accurately calculates state and local taxes for the customer's shipping address. TaxCloud does either require you turn on Automated Compliance (which means you must charge in the states that require it) or pay the $10 per month fee to use their tax calculation services.
Feel free to take a look at the screenshots and demo site, and if you're interested let me know at www.getclearthinking.com/contact if you have any further questions.

Thanks for the information, Johnathan. I did several hours of reading last night after posting my question and came to the same conclusion you suggested. The powers that be are trying to pass legislature that would force internet businesses to collect and pay taxes to the various states, but I suspect that they will have a hard time enforcing that. And I would rather not collect taxes. I'm having a hard enough time getting my site to work properly. I don't need to create more work! Again, I appreciate the response!
