New Install: PHP5.3+ Required

I have installed OpenCart 2.1.0.1 per instructions. All went well until I tried to log on the first time. After typing in the correct URL, I got this message: PHP5.3+ Required

I went into my cpanel, and found that my host (hostgator) is using php 5.4.45. I assume that the plus sign after PHP5.3 means it has to be v5.3 or newer. Any suggestions?

Found the problem - in my cpanel it was set to use an older version of PHP for some reason. Changed that, and it works great now other than the other couple of issues that I've posted about....
