Hi,

Can anybody point me towards some general instructions on how to actually accept credit card payments with open cart?  I'm 100% new to this sort of thing and have no clue really where to start.

Thanks a million

well 2 things

do you want to accept them from your site (offline manual processing witha  POS) or use a 3rd party (paypal, or bankpayment gateway)?

once we know that we may be able to help point you the right path

That's a good question.  But I thought that there might be a way to implement a solution that automated the whole process.  So I suppose that sounds like option number 2:  via a 3rd party.

the paypal module for payment will allow for users to pay with credit card with out an account.

now for that to work you need to have a business account with paypal for your clients to see the option on there payment screen

Are you sure about that? I always thought of PayPal to be somewhat of a viral nature:

Customer can make credit card payment via PayPal, but needs to sign up with a new PayPal account in order to complete the transaction if he doesn't yet have a PayPal account.

Which makes me wonder:
What is the best payment gateway company for processing credit card payments?
How good is Google Checkout compared to PayPal?
Are there any other ones which only charge on a per-transaction basis (no monthly fees or setup costs)?
