I've found several threads regarding upgrading directly from older OC versions to OC 2.0. That seems somewhat problematic. I don't want to shut my site down while I'm reconfiguring the site. I was wondering if it would be better to install the new OpenCart to a different directory and get it set up with my template, plugins etc. and then either move it or redirect to a new directory when it's ready to go?
Is there a plugin that will migrate the database from version 1.5.6.4 to 2.0?
How difficult would it be to move OC 2.0 after installation to another location?
Thank you!

1. Install your OC2 in another subdirectory with it's OWN DB, on your Site and test it for function.
2. DO NOT install any THEME and/or Extension in OC2 at this time.
3. Copy your existing OC v.1.5.x DB into another One by use of your Site Admin MySql Functions, as shown on the image below. YOU MAY HAVE TO create a NEW, empty, DB first, to be able to ADDRESS/ACCESS it by the COPY-Function. OR THEN, use an existing, not longer used, DB, and, if so, clean OUT it's existing Tables&CONTENT, before filling it up again with your (to be used again) v.1.x SHOP DB Data.
3. Read the following Pages, to find out, on how to update the NEWLY COPIED DB, before you RENAME your both CONFIG.PHP Files accordingly, to match the NEW Opencart V.2 'DB Access Credentials'.

The second would be:
Trying to UPGRADE your existing Shop, or DB, assumingly ending up in a plain Disaster, and without a working Online Shop at all, by handling contrary to the LAW: Never touch a running Engine, before the Replacement really works.

---
After ALL THIS, you just RENAME the SUBS, RENAME your old Shop SUB in another one (!! leave the Software there, as well as it's DB, for just in case !!), and then use the KNOWN http Site address again for the New Shop, by JUST changing Links and Paths accordingly in your BOTH V2 config.php Files.
THEN, and NEVER BEFORE, you may start to play around with Extensions / Mod's / Themes / and so on, again, after having CREATED another V2 SPARE (COPIED) FULL DB, not just a Backup, on the Server, containing all relevant DEFAULT DATA, for, just in CASE !

Just to give you a sample, why. I just had to kill an entire Site, after beeing trapped (timewise!) by a MULTI Combo Add to cart Option, leaving 'traces' just about everywhere, 'physically' unremovable by simple 'removal', then, throwing errors all over the place, exept one would start to kill entries in several plaes, troughout the DB, as well. I got really pissed on this, believe me...

Good Luck

Never install anything, not explicitly marked to function with your OC-2 Version

The main reason I even started considering a change to the new version was that the designer that I used for my site suggested that I upgrade because the only responsive themes that they have developed are for OC V2. Maybe it would be better to find another designer with a responsive template that will work with my current version? That sounds much less troublesome.

I have a version running here:
http://www.openshop.li/cart/
Everything else is FUTURE Talk, and really a TESTER-Version only, as long as it is in it's development-Stage, if one really depends on a running store, at least, from my point of view.

If you want 'the easy way out' for now, I would look at existing themes or look for a developer to make one for v1.5.6.4BigLen wrote:Thank you for your thoughtful insight Ernie!I was concerned before, but after reading your reply I really have my reservations about making a move at this time. It seems my gut feelings were confirmed.

I do like the newest version of OC and would suggest upgrading to it when you can. I can assist with the upgrade and migration of data if you need help.

I've still been kicking this around, but really do need to get a responsive theme soon one way or another.I do like the newest version of OC and would suggest upgrading to it when you can. I can assist with the upgrade and migration of data if you need help.

You say you like the newest version of OC. What are the biggest benefits in your opinion over Version 1.5.6.4 that I'm currently using? What is the main reason you think I should go to version 2 instead of just getting a different template for the version I'm using now?
Appreciate your input!

I feel that OC 2 offers speed improvements, new features and it's the active development branch. The 1.5.6 branch isn't going to get patched anymore and it won't have any new features added to it. Features like OC Mod make it a lot easier to install extensions, responsive design for the admin and catalog side are nice and knowing that vulnerabilities, if any, are being actively addressed.
If you haven't yet, take a look at the demo or install a copy of 2.1.0.1 in a subfolder to take a look around the software.
