How to create 'Buy 3 for £x' Offer

I am looking for a simple way to add offers to my store such as 'Buy 3 for £x', or 'buy x and get y for £x' which will be applied at checkout.

Will I need to use an extension? I have taken a look at some extensions but they seem so complicated for what I need them for. Any suggestions please?
