What is the concept of having category_path table?

Greetings to all. This is my first post in opencart forum. I got help from here many times, but I could not find answer to this question. Hope you can make me understand.

I was trying to make add some features and hence making some changes in the admin part. I found a query relating to category_path. I spent many hours searching about that and ended up here.

If any expert can make me understand about category_path table concept used, I will be highly obliged.
