is it possible to move the description field so it is next to the larger image on the product display page and then move the buy button below the description and images?
im using the default template.

Yes, but you'll need to edit the file ../catalog/view/theme/default/template/product/product.tpl
You'll also need to edit the stylesheet and then check your changes in various browsers, especially older ones.
