I am an OpenCart newbie waiting for 1.4.1, but I need to get a cart setup for a client ASAP. Tried osCommerce last night, but the code/css is convoluted and overkill for the intended purpose. OpenCart appears to be a great open-source 'lite' cart.

Any info on whether the database structure will remain untouched?

I would assume the database won't change. If it does, it shouldn't be too hard to modify. If I were you, I would start a dev system of 1.4.0 and get everything the way you want it. By the time you are finished, maybe 1.4.1 will be out and you can install that instead. I got the impression that 1.4.1 is going to be mostly bug fixes and as such the basics should act about the same.

Insert Catalog/Product can be fixed by removing German language first

Daniel (and others) - I've been reading the forums here for a week in order to evaluate OpenCart, and also to evaluate the quality of the community. I think the product looks great - very clean and easy to use - and the community strikes me overall as very friendly and helpful. Great job, Daniel - with the product, and also with gathering a good group of users.

That said, I'd like to echo AltusBooks' sentiment regarding setting release expectations. I've just about settled on using OpenCart for a client's project. I expect to make heavy modifications to the templates, and I'd like to be sure that my work won't break - and I'd like to see the outcome of several bug fixes - so I'm waiting for 1.4.1 - but I've watched the date slide over several days. I understand that Daniel is just one guy working on a labor of love, and fortunately for me, I have a little time to spare, but it's a bit frustrating trying to make key decisions without reliable information.

Doesn't look like opensource to me... nor does my credit card statement from 5 years ago
The "code" is opensource meaning they don't obfuscate it. But its still a commercial cart

I don't doubt that it's coming, Daniel. I've been reading the forums for the last week, so I see how things work here. I trust that you'll have the next version ready when it's ready, and I'm sure that it'll look great. I wouldn't even take the time to post here if I didn't think you had a good product, and I hope to become an OpenCart advocate.

However, I still want to point out that your response would be unacceptable in a professional environment. It doesn't provide any specific information to help me make decisions and keep my own client informed.

I'm not getting on your case, honest - I see that your hands are full with this update, and I don't mean to waste your time. I see that you're passionately committed to improving your product and expanding your community of users, so I offer this as a piece of advice. In order to succeed in the long run, you will have to apply more professional practices to your development/release process. I've seen other threads in the forum that touch on this, and I expect that you already understand it, so I just want to add my voice to the chorus. And, if there's anything I can do to help, let me know, 'cause I'd be happy to.

Okay, that's what I would assume as well, but one never knows what will be changed when software is under revision by a sole developer. Thanks for your input... I'll be installing 1.4.0 this afternoon.

LOL. Nailed it.
This, like the versioning discussion are not really about what opencart currently is, but what it will be in the future. Opencart is a great and with each release is rapidly improving. I think it is professional quality and should eventually be treated in a more professional manner.

I am very happy with it as is. I started off with magento, but hated it and started writing my own system. Eventually I found opencart and realized it was exactly the program I was hoping to write with many features I haven't yet thought about including.

Me too - I like it even though I have had many problems (mostly self-induced) but I love the backend (and front end) though I have to study a bit more (once I have a site working) the structure of things. Do not programme so have to rely on those who are to help me out.

As far as Daniel is concerned - I am more than impressed with what he does/is doing. I think his attitude toward the "powered by" byline is more than admirable, though personally I feel that one gives credit where credit is due - though I think that instead of "powered by" perhaps "e-commerce by" is a bit more eyecatching. I shall be donating when I get a website up and running smoothly but that is not to say I haven't already invested in this product.

There is a saying "what the eye doesn't see (interpret to what the ear doesn't hear) the heart doesn't grieve about". In short, what you don't know doesn't harm/concern you.

Apart from getting a version eliminated of bugs fairly quickly, any good, clean releases should be known about when they are ready. That way everyone plods along highlighting some shortcomings and; no-one suffers from constipation along the way..... >:D

Just my 2c worth

A stupid question is the one you -don't- ask.........(Anon)

That's pretty funny after doing my first real client site with Magento I was looking around and didn't really find anything I liked and I was in the process of laying out a db to write my own store when I came across opencart. Granted there are things I would rather have done different ways, but overall I think it blows all the other carts out there away.

I am in the same boat as some others here, I have 2 friends that are ready to roll with me building them a ecommerce system, and I was kinda waiting for 1.4.1, I admit a definite release date would be nice, but guys...you gotta have some understanding!!! The way I think, if my friend says build the cart now, I will build 1.3.4 that I know is stable, or search the bug fixes for 1.4.0 and build now...otherwise, just wait till the next release is done..and be thank ful that there is a testing team who are spending their time to make sure the product is good for us! And lastly give some gratitude to the author that is doing a great job and working in an amazing product. Nothing in life is perfect, so be thank ful what is working well, and understanding & patience for what needs improvement.

Thank you everyone for your hard work.

I would like to add in a supposed "professional environment", you would not be conversing with the developer, you would not necessarily know when an update would be forthcoming or what it would cover, and when you cry for help over something you broke or a bug, you'll be talking to customer service or putting in a "trouble ticket" instead of getting the rapid response available on these forums. Myself I am very pleased to be able to use a very good application at my preferred price point, and if an update requires I redo a few things I will grin and bear it.

first post. I am glad I am using Open cart... didn't know anything about it 10 days ago and I have now a fairly customised 1.4 based webshop with very few issues. Keep up the good work!

(probably not the appropriate place to post but after reading some comments it seems to counter point the unnecessary negative mood present in some)

You got a point. Call Microsoft and ask them when Windows 8 is coming out :)
Or tell them that the screen refresh gets stuck and see what they say :).. and you actually have to PAY for that software.

I'd say "it will be released soon" is a better answer than any "professional" company would ever give.

Completely agree on all that. I have "paid" for some paid scripts in the past and totally regretted it. Some the support was pathetic at best, and some even had encrypted code, so you couldn't modify major portions of it...even to your needs! And try writing to the developer to ask about changing something like that! Haaa!

Some people argue that if you want support you've got to go with a commercial application, but that in itself does not guarantee you any better support...at least in reality. Sometimes you have to pay extra for that support, as we know. This is a big reason why I like OpenSource, or at least customizable scripts/applications. Especially with a shopping cart, there is no such thing as *one size fits all*....not even close to it. And if you have to deal with a horrible support system at a paid source, you'll be ten times more irritated than waiting a bit for a quality update from a source like OpenCart.

As other stated above thinking about writing their own shopping carts....I think a lot of us have had thoughts along those lines...simply because no one was making a "practical" cart that worked well, and was affordable...let alone at the cost of OC. And then Daniel puts out this great little application and continues to improve it by leaps and bounds regularly. It may still not be a one size fits all, but we CAN tweak the parts each of us needs, and make it fit our needs. OC at least more or less fits that need better than just about every cart out there on the market right now...free OR paid. I can't wait to see 1.4.1 and up, but I'll wait patiently in the meantime....and continue using 1.3.4 where I'm using it now.
