I'm wondering if the problems I'm experiencing with the vQmod might be due it having been installed while I had the admin directory renamed admin-bla-bla-bla following security guidelines to rename it.
I've since changed it back to 'admin'.
Does the admin directory need to be named 'admin' during vQmod instillation?

You can edit the pathreplaces.php file that comes with vqmod to tell it the new name of your admin file.

Thanks - would I needed to have edited that pathreplaces.php file before or after the install?
If your renamed the directory before you installed vqmod, then before you installed vqmod.
