show product count in categories

just got a fesh copy of opencart (this time i went with 1.5.6 instead of the old 1.5.2.1)
ok i know if you go (in admin) system-settings-edit-option you can click yes to this option (Category Product Count:
Show the number of products inside the subcategories in the storefront header category menu. Be warned, this will cause an extreme performance hit for stores with a lot of subcategories!)

so i could have sworn there is a way that you can click a category (store side not admin side) and as you are searching through the pages of listings/product the amount of stock available will show (usualy if i remember right after the name of the item) there as well as when you click on the product discription. How do you do that? is it a mod i need to instal or is there a setting hidden i am missing?
