Hello,
I am not programmer but want to upgrade my store from 1.5.3 to 1.5.6. There seems to be alot of problems from reading board on upgrading. Has anyone found a clean, simple upgrade procedure I can follow that will give me best chance at successful upgrade. Also, I will have my host (hotgator) do backup for me but do I need to do any additional backup before starting? thank you

Don't go to v1.5.6 unless you want the openbay features + bugs. So v1.5.5.1 should be the best option, and upgrading shouldn't be an issue. Just ensure you upgrade your theme and extensions

Well, here's my way of doing it.

1. Do a manual back up of your store and database (If you are not confident in upgrading)
2. Upload the version you wish to upgrade to. Do not replace the config.php files, do not upload the image and download folder. Those two folders aren't needed for upgrading (v1.5.5.1)
3. Go to yourwebsite.com/install and you should see the upgrade screen.
4. Click the button to proceed. Wait, and upgrading is complete! Simple as that

Now, you will need to upgrade any themes / modules you are using. Download the latest copy of all, for your version. Upgrade them accordingly

As long as you are not a programmer, I'd suggest you to make migration in an alternative way.
1. Install a fresh OpenCart 1.5.6
2. Move data from your current store with migration service called Cart2Cart.(easy to use, don't require additional software or programming skills)
3. Customize the store. Migration service doesn't move design and extantions.

That's it!
I think this method is the most convenient for you. Hope you will like it.

Good lick!
