How do I offer free downloads without going through Paypal?

Hi, I like this script very much, small, neat and simple.

I'm uploading some pdfs which will be freely downloadable for people who sign up, but not sure how to avoid going through the 'Paypal' button.

I've searched on this forum and couldn't find anything specific, maybe someone can point me in the right direction.

The products are correctly pointing to the pdfs, disabled all shipping options, I will have some products go through Paypal though. I've gone through the process of adding an item in the cart, going to checkout, but the paypal option is set. Am I missing a step somewhere in the admin section?

Have a look in the database at the result of adding a download. Add some sql and code to create similar entries in the database at the time a customer signs up so that the downloads will automatically appear in their account without them having to "buy" them through the shopping cart.

You could also create a module like the latest/specials module for free downloads and have them appear on the home page. The template for displaying them could contain links to produce a download. You could show it only on the account page or to everyone except "guest" on the home page.... Lots of possibilities.
