Goto Admin->Extensions->Payment
Install Paypal Standard
Edit Paypal Standard
Enter the fields. They should be self evident but if not
Email: This is your paypal email
Sandbox: This is used if you want to test with a paypal sandbox account. Usually no as this is meant for devs
Transaction method: Sale means take money immediately, Auth means hold money and you have 3 days to manually claim it from your paypal account. Usually you want Sale
Debug Mode: Enable it if you are having problems or want to see the messaging between your site and paypal. You can see the message in the Admin->System->Error Logs
Total: Set this to 0.01 at least so that orders that have 100% discount coupons don't enable paypal
The statuses are all obvious
canceled status should be set to canceled
refunded to refunded
etc

Hello, I am looking at control panel for setting up PayPal payments standard. Prior Post said that these options should be self evident however I find that I am confused.

Specifically I do not understand the drop-down menus for all the various status items. They are all defaulting to "Cancelled" and since I do not understand how these items are used by the system I am not sure what setting I should use. Should I just make them match the topic, i.e. expired status set to "expired" etc.

Can someone please make this a bit more clear for me? Thanks very much!

So, how do we enable credit card processing, which is what PayPal payments Standard is all about?

The credit card is processed through paypal.

Donate | Confirm Email when registering or during guest checkout | Print Order Information

PayPal Standard will direct the buyer to PayPal's site and they'll pay there and be redirected back to your site afterwards.

You can configure these any way that you want, but typically, pending is pending, cancelled is cancelled, etc. There's flexibility to do something different if you need to for your application.

I followed Qphoria's directions and the payment shows up in paypal, the user is returned to my site, but no orders show up. It does not show up in the user's history, and it does not show up in the admin panel. Anyone have any ideas?

Well I figured out the problem. I had the directory that my webstore is in password protected, this is what was causing my problems. Removed the password and paypal is working just fine.
