I'm completely new to Opencart and want to change the default template to a blue one but have no idea how to or where to upload the folders. I've downloaded a couple of free templates from this site.

Hi,
First make sure the template is compatible with your Opencart version.
1.3.2 Templates will not work on Opencart v1.3.4 and vice versa.
To tell you the truth I'm not sure I've seen any free templates for Opencart v1.3.4... So you might be using 1.3.2 templates which as I've said will not work.
If you do manage to find a 1.3.4 template then all you need to do is copy the template THEME directory into:
catalog/view/theme/
Then when you log into admin you can select the template from admin->settings.

I too am new and i am wondering everyone mentions in these forums that you have to install to a certain directory? but the site will not load up? is there a program for viewing and editing these templates before uploading?

Thanks for your earlier answer. I realise now why my template will not show - due to my version of Open Cart being v1.34.
You mention upgrading a template from v1.32 to v1.34 in one of your other posts. Are you able to provide any help on how to do this, or what the differences are between the two (I would presume there would be a slight coding change)?

It's not as easy as it would seem at first. The method I have used is this:
Open v1.3.2 layout.tpl
Open v1.3.4 header.tpl, footer.tpl
Recreate the layout.tpl html across header.tpl and footer.tpl
Now for the time consuming part.
Open both v1.3.2 and v1.3.4 stylesheets and copy across styles where you can and manually edit the new styles that are not named the same in the older stylesheet.
Now, most free templates will not alter anything but the template/common files so you can pretty much delete all the other template files and let them fall back to the defaults.
It's then a matter of making sure anything in template/common that has been altered is copied across to the v1.3.4 templates.
Not an easy task.
Before anyone jumps the gun, yes it may work just dropping in the old stylesheet but it's not good practice because there are depreciated styles and new styles that will be undefined.
