yes there are still templates. the difference is there is no longer one layout.tpl now every top level file includes the header side columns and footer. That's the main difference. There are some other differences as well. But it really is not a simple task to convert a 1.3.2 or lower template to 1.3.3 or higher.

templating for 1.3.4 is really very similar to 1.3.2 The only real difference is that you don't have a layout.tpl and you don't need every file in your template folder since there is fallback to the default template for files that don't exist.
