I moved my own store to 1.5.4.1 just 4weeks ago.

Enabled SEO-urls, made sure that I had custom titles etc. ect.

Added a great sitemap-extension that generates sitemaps for products, categories and cms-pages.

Google and Bing picked up pretty quick and I'm on page 1 at Google.nl with (almost) all my products ;D

I have a question about SEO - is it bad or good if I include the same url words in category and than products, ex. domain.com/superfood/spirulina-chlorella/spirulina

so its not the same name, the category has just the same word included as the product...what do you guys think?

and another thing I would like to ask, if I may - do page titles have to be unique or i can include the same word in all of the product title pages, for example spirulina-superfood, goji-berries-superfood, chia-seeds-superfood... ? is bad or good for seo spiders to see the same word included in so much page titles?

Thanks for your time..
I really would suggest some research into what keywords people use to find your type of products and then mix it up a bit. I do not know that much about health foods but I would say spirulina-superfood-for-health or healthy-goji-berries etc might figure in the mix. I try to mix it up with what the product does, benefits of it, what it is for, etc as well as the product names. And try to keep in mind the way people search for them based on keyword research. If you match the popular search terms into your category and product seo urls, it will greatly help your search results for that term.

You definitely need text on your product pages, not just dimensions. You can certainly recycle somewhat, but unique content will get you better rankings than using the same descriptions for everything. The descriptions you use will really depend on the type of products your are selling - my lingerie descriptions are a lot more romantic and suggestive than the ones I write for statues for example. I try to include keywords in them no matter what though and aim for at least 2-3 sentences per product at the bare minimum.

The best product descriptions focus on benefits for the customer - why they should buy that item. What it does, how it benefits them, how it solves a problem they have, etc. At the very least, highlight the features or design of the item and just go from there. Pictures sell items best, but sometimes customers don't see that the garment zips up the back, or buttons down the front with brass buttons, etc. so describe those features. That alone can give you a couple of sentences :)

It splits categories, products and pages and is more detailed in what is feeds to Google.

Hi, labeshops. can you please tell me how you were able to get breadcrumbs with categories included even if you get to the product using search or featured?
ie search>category>subcategory>product instead of the usual search>product
thanks

It's a mod - I think this one http://www.opencart.com/index.php?route ... on_id=9609 but there are several if you search for "category breadcrumb"

Hi labeshops,

Great work! If I may ask...How did you manage to write your "Product Returns" conditions in the Returns page? Did you write the content directly in the return.php or it's an extension that allows you to write content anywhere?

Regards

I put it in the text_description field in the catalog/language/english/account.return.php file so it's identical on all my stores. Anything I want to be consistent on all my stores, I modify in the language or controller file. Things I want to be unique to each store (like the header, footer, etc), I do in that stores template file.

Hi Labeshops,
Congrats on your site !!
I have a few questions for you, you sd, in your first post " I did htaccess 301 redirects for my most popular products "
So I have been doing a lot of research on google seo as far as re-directs and trailing slashes & supposedly a lot of seo sites are saying you should really add a / after each product category & not for your products to avoid duplication, do you do that or have you heard of that ?
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot. ... slash.html
I was just wondering if you were doing that ?
I have been trying to do that on my site, it has been penalized by googles penguin & this is a way of helping your site, but I can't figure out how to add slashes in the htaccess file to all the categories and do redirects & make an exception for the product urls ? - Just not working.
My host sd, opencart not designed to do that ?
Also if you can explain the code you did for some of your popular prdts if you can ?
Thanks

No idea on the /. Don't know how you'd do that and I didn't. Opencart already sets canonical links, so I didn't bother doing anything else.

I just did simple 301 redirects for each product like:

Code: Select all

RewriteRule ^jewelry/earrings-ear-cuffs/temptation-snake-ear-wrap-by-alchemy-gothic/prod_108\.html$ /temptation-snake-ear-wrap-alchemy-gothic-e234 [R=301,L]
I only did the ones that were linked from other sites so the link would still work from my old stores to the new ones.
