If a customer orders 10 Red, XL, T-shirt, Item 12345

but then changes their mind and would like to change it to:

8, Blue, L, T-shirts, Item 12345 (same item)

they currently have to delete the item from their cart and then go back to the product and start over.

rather, it would be pretty neat if they could change the options of an item within the cart without having to delete/go-back

each item in the cart could have their respective select lists with the already-selected options selected. however, next to each option could be a checkbox that if checked would then allow changing that particular option

there would also need to be a change in the pricing and/or availability as well to reflect the newly selected options

think this would be do-able?

I agree. This would be an "update" feature that extended just being able to update the quantity but also update other attributes. Perhaps this has already been done. If not, needs to. Good idea.

yeah, this would be a most cool feature

you could even have a switch per option whether to allow such editing in the cart, like some options could be allowed to be edited and some not (for whatever reason)

I have to concur. This is really needed for a shop that sells customized products. The unavailability of this feature impacts my store negativity from a user's perspective and could cost me business in the long run.

I am about to hire someone to do it as it seem there is no extension currently available for 1.5.4.1. But it would be so awesome if it was standard feature.

Thank you for your attention. Be prosperous.

Unless someone decides to make this, it probably won't be done. There are other areas to post a topic like this as well to make sure it get's "seen". I deleted all of the negative posts. Those that commented are warned.
