Catagories in home.tpl

I am trying to get my index page to appear like the attached image, as it is getting integrated into an existing site of mine.

I have managed to get it onto the home page by making the layout.tpl as attached

However, this is obviously not ideal as when any of the catagories (or any link) is selected the catagories will be sat at the bottom.

I want to put this in home.tpl to get rid of this error!!

I've tried so many different methods, unfortunately none of them seem to be working!!

You could leave the template as it is and modify instead, catalog\template\default\css\default.css

Note for example, that #column and #content define the location of the etc elements in the template. You can change their displayed locations by modifying the style sheet.

For example, I have moved the categories, cart, reviews etc from the left to the right of the page by only changing the style sheet.
