Hi all! My client sells both physical products and digital downloads on his store. When downloads are paid for by credit card/Paypal, he would like for the orders to be marked as "complete" so that the customers can download their file and the status is not left as "pending" (nothing else is required for processing).
However, changing the settings so that credit card-paid orders are "complete" means that even the physical orders (which require shipping) show up as "complete" as soon as they come in, even if they haven't been shipped yet.
Is there any way to mark only the downloadable orders as "complete" upon payment?
Orders, in theory should "always" show up as complete after you charge a card. I've been doing ecommerce for 11 years and normally the first status is complete which means you have completed a payment. If you have a payment gateway that puts a hold on the card or is only "verifying funds" then you use PENDING.
Later you change the status to shipped for physical items. I think you should keep it the way you have it. Complete for everything.

Thanks avvici! Makes sense - I probably need to reassign some of the statuses for him.
Right now we use "complete" to mean "shipped".
I think his real request, though, is that the download only orders are automatically marked as "shipped" after payment, so that he doesn't have to check whether or not he needs to ship anything on that order.
But I know that could get pretty messy, especially when you have download + physical item orders...

I have the same problem. It gets really messy if the customer mixes physical and digital products in one order. I had to "hack" the code for that case. There was a mod here in the forum which I am trying to find to put my modification in there as well, since I came up with another solution.
