open cart installation error

Hi, every one I am new to open cart and I am attempting to install the cart on windows xp sp3 and xampp server with Mysql and PHP, I am trying to get to know the cart in order to make a public installation on a project for a customer, the help that I need is if its possible would some one give me some direction as to why I am getting error 404 every time I am attempting the install of the cart on the local host, I must be missing something that I have not looked into, any one that has the expertise would please point me in right direction. First - where do you receive the 404? When you attempt to load OpenCart initially? Or is it during the installation?

I have run into the 404 Not Found problem a well. I encounterd it after supposedly successfully installing open cart and clicking the "Online Shop" button after installation. I too did a local install on windows vista using MySQL and PHP. Even browsing to the admin site I get Server Error in Application "DEFAULT WEB SITE". Also both config files are empty; that can't be right? The MySQL db was populated though.

It might be how something to do with the $_SERVER variables.
