I was just wondering if this was possible to do in opencart,
have a pen for sale etc and want the customer to add one line or two lines of writing on the product.

catalog > options create one as a textfield or text area.
For my example, "Engraving Back EXACT as you want it" is the option name and it's a textarea. Then on the watch product I assigned it via product > options to the product.
In your example, in catalog > options add an option with "Childs Name (20 characters)" as the option name, type text. Then assign it to your product via product > options.
