Hey all, I just signed up with UPS and I've added the functionality to my site to link to my UPS account.

So I'm testing the functionality and when I set up a test product which has the dimensions 5"x5"x5" and weight of 2lbs. (a rather small package), the rate for UPS Ground is $14.99 to ship to an address under 10 miles away. It seems $14.99 is the cheapest that the shipping gets with UPS. Is this normal? This seems ridiculously expensive to me.

ups is expensive if you do not get a bulk discount. an alternative would be to add usps if you are in the US. they are usually way cheaper but they don't compare product size against flat rate boxes. but you can get live rates. same package would be 8.65 to ship half way across the country with usps.

Did you compare against the rates calculated on their website?

a 5X5X5 2lb box from missouri to california

using the rate calculator on ups website is $14.50.. ground shipping 4 days in transit

using the rate calculator on usps website is $8.13(paid online)... website says 2-9 days but going by personal experience it usually arrives in 2-4 days to most destinations in the lower 48 states.

you can even use priority mail which is $8.65 (paid online)... delivery time 2-3 days

Thanks for your help guys.

Hmm, when I enter the same locations with a 2lb package using the shipping calculator on their page, I get a price for $12 for UPS ground.

I wonder if the Opencart plugin bumps up that price a bit to account for packaging and stuff?

I switched to USPS and the rates are more normal. Looks like I won't be using UPS! Thanks again.
