I'd like to clean install 1.5.2 (new database as well), get it working how I want, then import the info from the currently working OC v1.5.1.3.1.

Do I need to convert the bachup.sql file in some way or should I restore the new MySQL DB from a backup of the old?

I'd rather not upgrade the existing store just in case it fails.

A backup of MySQL through Phpmysql can be used to load the original data; however, to do more than a table/column to table/column restore, you will need to edit the backup.sql file. To do this you should be familiar with SQL, I would even say 'must' be familiar.

My little disclaimer here is that I am not familiar with Open Cart prior to 1.5.2.x.

So, it may be better to duplicate the MySQL db and OC 1.5.1.3.1 install and upgrade it to 1.5.2, get it working as I wish then switch it over?

I apologize for over-complicating my response. The instructions for upgrading are in the file you will download for 1.5.2.1.

Indeed, I want to upgrade/use 1.5.2.1, however I need to ensure everything works (extensions, tweaks) before it is live to the world. I have a few custom tweaks here and there that need to be implemented first, hence the questions of porting data.
I don't want to update a live and working site, have it fail/be wrong and stop the revenue stream.

If you have space on your server, you can create a second database for the new Open Cart version, and install Open Cart 1.5.2.1 to a different directory. Then export your current database to somename.sql, then import the backup copy into the newly created database and see if it works.

Let's say your store is in /public_html/store/, you could make a directory named /public_html/teststore

Then you can point your browser to www.domainname.com/teststore/index.php and see what you see. Personally, I have a test domain I use for screwing things up, eleven bucks a year is worth it.

That's what I have done, using a spare domain, new database, new install, exported data into new database, setting up extensions etc and a few other tweaks.
Couple of extensions haven't been updated to work with the latest version of OC, so will need alternatives. Good job I didn't update the live site after all eh!
Few hours tomorrow should see it completed. ;D
