Banners

I think that banners should be made as a built in module that can be placed anywhere in the site but are category and product specific - this way you can place appropriate upselling at the right locations according to your industry - This should be built in and would very much enhance OC

You can allready do that in opencart by default. you allready have the banner extension and module as for category based banners, you have layout override.

Not so familiar with layout override and how to use it - but that sounds like what I'm after - category based banners or upsellers
