Been trying to get seo urls to work in order to get rid of the clumsy urls like:
http://www.mydomain.com/index.php?ro ... duct_id=47

Steps already taken:
1. enable mod_rewrite on apache
2. rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess

URLs are still not seo'd. What additional steps am I missing?
There is a post from crazydog, but that doesn't work either - http://forum.opencart.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=5146

Any help appreciated. Seems like a lot of other people are in same boat as me.

OK, I added new products and seo urls works up until the product page. Is there a way to separate words with hyphens(-) or underscores(_)?

It comes up as blank spaces right now:
www.mydomain.com/category-page/this is my item with blank spaces

Is it also possible to end each web page with .htm extension using seo urls?

When you are adding the product and you are typing the SEO in just type with underscores like this: this_is_my_item_with_blank_spaces and you will be fine.

you need to modify each product / category to have an SEO keyword.

OK, I tried that and it seemed to kind of work in as much as the url was now displaying correctly (www.mysite.co.uk\seo temr I used) but it only dispalys the home page, not the actual page it should be displaying.

Have I missed something? I will check with my host to make sure that the Mod Rewrite is on, but as the URL is displaying, I guess it is.

Any ideas?

make sure you don't include any spaces in the seo keyword box, replace spaces with underscores, see if that helps

I had the exact same problem. Single keywords never generated an SEO friendly URL. I had apache rewrite enabled and added the .htaccess file as suggested. It got so frustrating that I uninstalled the cart. If anyone can really come up with a solution to the SEO URL's working in this cart, I will re-install it.

On this discussion, will the SEO URL's work if the cart is installed in the root directory versus a subfolder directory? This was one of the things the crazydog topic was suggesting. That if you installed the cart in a subfolder, it wasn't working...which is what I did. i.e. domain.com/cart

I'd love to use this cart if anyone can help on this issue. Thanks!

Yep, just tried that too. Originally, I just added a SEO to a category, but I just tried it for a categroy and an item in that category. Still the same problem. I click on the category link, the page loads and I get the main home page although the url now displays when the SEO is.

grrrrr

Any ideas?

Thanks

Im having some issues trying to get the SEO friendly URLs working as well. When it says rename the htaccess.txt to .htaccess, I only found one .htaccess in the folder: \upload\admin\view\javascript\fckeditor\filemanager\connectors\py\ Is this the correct location of that file.

Also, when I issued the command MV htaccess.txt .htaccess to rename it, it dissappeared. Is that because it is now a hidden file?

Any help would be great since Im now getting a error when you click on a link.

Thx,
S

The file is generally in your root directory, unless there are some files/folders you don't want it to effect, in which case, put copies in all the folders you do want it to effect.

It will effect everything that is in the folder it's in and all sub folders and their content.

It will disappear once it is renamed as it becomes hidden. Although, you may be able to see if form with in the file manager that can be accessed via your Cpanel.

How do I go about doing this?
