Blank screen during installation

I have uploaded all the installation files and I get the first screen OK
The status fields show that the server settings are OK, though I did have to add:
php_flag magic_quotes_gpc off into my htaccess file because my server company has magic_quotes ON by default.
All listed/required file permissions have been CHMODed to 0777.

When I click the continue button (install/index.php?route=step_2), all I get is a blank screen... nothing at all on the page... and nothing at all when I "view source" either.

Server setup is:
Apache version 2.2.9 (Unix)
PHP version 5.2.5
MySQL version 4.1.22-standard
Architecture i686
Operating system Linux

OpenCart version is 1.3

Same result using Firefox, Chrome, IE8

It all worked OK on my localhost server - NuSphere Tech Platform
