Hi ,
My client is angry with the default template that comes with open cart. I downloaded a few from some sites but do not know how to install them. Is there any quick tips on how to install a new open cart template?
Also, I am still new to open cart, If I need to design mine to suite my client needs, what are the major header and footer files to focus on?
Any help will be greatly appreciated

I cant get this work properly. I created another map called test and i copyed there all the files that are in default theme. When i log in as admin and go to admin>configuration>settings, i still see only the default template/theme.mchaggis wrote:Install is fairly easy. Copy the entire template folder into the 'catalog/view/theme' folder. Then select the newly installed template from the dropdown box in admin>configuration>settings.
Why is that?

I have a same problem...
It's not weird it is just the new template system. This question has been answered again and again in Template Support. Daniel coded it that way and it actually helps quite a bit.
I think it's weird 'cause I have to look for it on the forum..RaymondBeaudoin wrote:It's not weird it is just the new template system. This question has been answered again and again in Template Support. Daniel coded it that way and it actually helps quite a bit.
I am just getting started with all this, so this may sound stupid to you, but please bear with me and help....
I have tried looking on the forums for this specific issue but haven't found a solution, though it is entirely possible that this has been answered before....
So...my objective is to modify the default template to change some minor things. However, I don't want to mess the default template up. Also, if and when I upgrade opencart, I dont want all my work overwritten by Daniel's default template.
Therefore, I copied the default template and pasted it back in the themes directory by the name Mycustomtemplate.
Next, I went to the main images directory and further into the templates directory, and copy pasted default.png as Mycustomtemplate.png
Now, in the Admin section (Admin>Configuration>Setting), in the dropdown for templates, Mycustomtemplate shows, and I selected this and saved changed.
I made a couple of changes (e.g. changed the box_top.png image) in Mycustomtemplate.
To my dismay, this change is not reflected in the website. After wasting an hour trying to figure out why these changes are not reflected, I finally decided to check the source code of a random page of the shop. Turns out the shop's code is still using the sytlesheet from default rather than from Mycustomtemplate!
How do I rectify this? Was I supposed to something apart from selecting the template in the dropdown? I haven't found any such suggestion in the documentation.
Please help!

Turns out that it was pretty simple, actually.
In /shop/catalog/view/theme/Mycustomtemplate/template/common folder, layout.tpl was still pointing to the default css instead of Mycustomtemplate css. Thanks readyman for pointing this out.
If you are using a readymade template, you won't have to encounter this problem at all, as the template designer would have done it already for you, but if you want to tweak the template yourself, this is an important little piece of information. I wish Daniel would include this in the documentation....better still, that he'd create an "SDK" that includes things like this...

With OpenCart 1.4.1 a new feature is added: Multishops.kunszun88 wrote:Hi guys, I'm new to Opencart. I use opencart version 1.4.1 now, and there are no "admin>configuration>settings" in the admin page. How can I install new template ?
Because of that, you will find the settings regarding templates under:
and select their your desired shop (if you have more than one).System -> Shop
This means also, you can define for each shop an own design.
And installing is the same as before: just copy your files to your webserver.

www.opencartstore.com
Get OpenCart Templates and OpenCart Modules.
Template in the main image folder, you should put a file name, regardless of your theme is called Thumb image, then you will see the drop-down menu
I'm lost on the templates too. I've used OpenCart for years, but am now getting back to a new installation after some time and have spent the last 3 hours trying to get any other template to work other than default. It's frustrating, and I'm now just hard coding it all. The fact that it reads some elements from the default template is confusing - it just made more sense to duplicate the template like we used to do. And I've searched the forums too - not seeing much help on this topic at all!
