What may be happening in the background? How can I remedy this issue?

right click on a product page and click "view source code" and you will see no html codes have been generated. There must be a reason for this, you might have modified \catalog\view\theme\default\template\product\product.tpl.
Did you use any vqmod or any extenstion that modify(or overwrite) the core file? try to uninstall the vqmod or reupload the product.tpl file.

Thank you for your reply. I did not modify the product.tpl file. However, I did update an extension yesterday and invovled updating the vqmod files.
then try uninstalling the vqmods one by one. I recommend this free mod, vqmod manager:

It offer an option of "uninstalling" a vqmod,not deleting it.
Your problem could be caused by a badly written vqmod or the conflict between two vqmods.
