Can themes test if the user is an approved account?

I'm trying to evaluate how much work it will take to customize OpenCart to a client's needs. They need to restrict their cart to Resellers only, so we'll be hiding prices and requiring that customers be moderated. However, they don't want the catalog shown to guests or to unapproved customers. My thought was that it would be simpler to implement this last feature in the theme.

I know that the theme has a variable $logged to indicated whether a user is logged in or not. However, can an unapproved customer still log in, or is there an $approved flag to test if the user has been approved?

They cannot login until approved.
