1.4.9.4. EMAIL CONFIRM ADMIN ETC ISSUES

I cannot upgrade because both my clients are using templates and extensions that do not support 1.5.x
With that said...

v1.4.9.4. emails when someone registers or orders to the admin or the customer are not being sent using Mail function and for the life of me I've tried external SMTP and internal and nothing works.

Is there a code fix for this? I know I've seen people do it for other versions. Thanks.
my server does support php mail function because i use php mail contact forms all the time with Joomla, etc.

i know i saw someone fix the big in the coding for 1.5.x but what about for 1.4.9.4?

the emails when someone registers an account that get sent are not being sent. to admin nor customer. same with order confirmation emails, etc.
